Created on January 1, 2011, the Institute of Analytical Sciences (ISA) is one of Europe’s leading centers for research, training and expertise in this field. Located close to La Doua science campus (Lyon – Villeurbanne) within the Lyon City of the Environnement and Analysis (CLEA), ISA is a joint research unit (UMR 5280) affiliated to the CNRS (The National Center for Scientific Research) and Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University.
The institute brings together over 120 scientists and technical staff with expertise ranging from theoretical chemistry to modeling, biochemistry, analytical chemistry and physics. ISA also boasts a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment.
The Institute has organized its research activities along 3 axes: Multidimensional approaches for complex matrices (MDMC), Surface and miniaturization for analytical research and technology (SMART), Theoretical and experimental approaches for molecular interactions (ATHEXIM). Research focuses on the development of new methods through continuous technological innovation for the analysis of complex systems in all disciplines, with applications for health and the environment.
ISA activities are driven both by fundamental objectives in analytical sciences and by interactions with the socio-economical environment at local, national and international levels. The Institute has partnerships with international research centers (e.g. CSIC, International Center for Research on Cancer) and national academic partners (e.g. within LabexIMUST, Institute for Light and Matter (ILM), INRAE…) as well as industrial partners (Biomérieux, Bluestar, Sanofi…) and manufacturers (Agilent, Bruker, Waters…).
The institute is involved in competitiveness clusters (Axelera, LyonBioPole, TEchtera, Plastipolis, etc.) and regional clusters (e.g. CLARA). Moreover, ISA hosts some start-ups.
The institute also contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate university programs, as well as continuing education. Academic staff are involved in several master’s programs and coordinate two of them (see Master’s and PhD programs page). It is also involved in a joint Erasmus mundus EACH (Excellence in Analytical Chemistry) master’s program. In terms of professional training, the Institute offers a number of training courses in a wide range of analytical techniques (see the Continuing professional training page).
