What is an Hospitalo-Universitary Institute (IHU) ?
The University Hospital Institutes (IHU) are French centers of excellence dedicated to biomedical research, healthcare, training, and technology transfer. Created as part of the Investments for the Future Program (PIA) launched in 2010, they bring together researchers, clinicians, and industry partners to foster medical innovation. In 2010, six IHUs were established, and a seventh was added in 2018.
As part of the France 2030 plan, the French government has strengthened its commitment to medical research and health innovation with a budget of 300 million euros specifically allocated for the creation of new IHUs. In May 2023, the President of the Republic announced the creation of 12 new IHUs under the France 2030 initiative, thereby expanding the model to new medical and scientific fields.
The Hepatology Institute of Lyon becomes a IHU…
The Lyon Hepatology Institute (IHL), established in 2022 and serving as the foundation for the creation of the IHU EVEREST, is a University Hospital Institute dedicated to liver diseases and directed by Prof. Fabien Zoulim (Professor of Medicine, HCL Croix Rousse). Officially recognized in May 2023, with funding of €20 million, its mission is to address current and future challenges in hepatology, particularly by contributing to the cure of chronic liver diseases.
The IHU stands out for its integrated approach, combining fundamental, translational, and clinical research. It brings together the expertise of several Lyon-based institutions, including the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL), Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 (UCBL), the Léon Bérard Center (CLB), and Inserm.

In this context, the Institute of Analytical Sciences (ISA), through researchers from the ANABIO-MS research team within the “Multi-dimensions for Complex Mixtures” (MDMC) division (S. Ayciriex, Associate Professor with Habilitation, UCBL) and the CHEMOD chemometrics platform (Y. Clément, Research Engineer, UCBL), has become a key partner of the IHU. This collaboration has led to the establishment of an innovative, next-generation analytical platform for multi-scale analysis of clinical and biological samples, using LC-ESI-HRMS coupling and MALDI MS imaging.
IHU missions
– Innovate to cure chronic liver diseases: develop new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to improve patient care.
– Facilitate collaboration between clinicians, scientists, and patients: identify unmet medical needs and enhance current diagnostic and therapeutic options.
– Accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into clinical practice: ensure that innovations quickly benefit patients.
– Train the next generation of professionals: provide high-level scientific education for future physicians and researchers in hepatology.
– Improve patient access to information and care: promote sustainable precision medicine for all patients with chronic liver diseases.
