Environmental DNA analysis is revolutionising ecology and conservation science; however, the excitement around it often tends to mask some of the complications and limitations associated with the eDNA workflow, especially when it comes to the efficiency and sustainability of water sampling. Here I will share our personal journey into the fascinating, filter-feeding, DNA-trapping world of sponges, and the simple, low-tech artificial solutions that they have inspired, which are now facilitating the upscaling of marine biodiversity assessment and monitoring, benefitting both fundamental and applied sciences.
